Supporting WELL projects

Soundscaping for your WELL strategy

Valeo Technology works alongside your WELL consultant, acoustic consultant and design team to integrate soundscaping into the project. We develop the soundscaping design, recommend compatible equipment, and provide testing, commissioning and supporting documentation.

What we deliver

Our scope on a WELL project

01

Soundscaping design

A zone plan and layouts developed with your design team, set by what each area is used for, and documented before anything is installed. The design is issued in a form your team can carry into its own documentation.

02

Equipment recommendation

Compatible loudspeakers, sensors and player hardware specified for the ceiling and services conditions on the floor, coordinated with the audio-visual or electrical contractor appointed to the project.

03

Testing

Ambient levels measured in the areas named in the brief, before and after installation, so the project has a before-and-after record rather than a design intent alone.

04

Commissioning

The system commissioned on site to the levels agreed with your acoustic consultant, zone by zone, with the settings recorded.

05

Supporting documentation

A report covering the system, the measured levels and the commissioned result, written so your WELL consultant can use it in the project’s submission.

Project experience

Where we have done this

On each of these projects Valeo Technology delivered the soundscaping and wrote the supporting report. What a project’s WELL assessment formally awards is determined by its WELL consultant and by the assessment itself.

  • GSK MelbourneHolds WELL Certification at the Platinum level, confirmed publicly by Commercial Real Estate in November 2024. The certification is the building’s. Valeo Technology delivered the soundscaping and wrote the supporting report.
  • GSK BangkokSoundscaping delivered and commissioned to the agreed background sound levels, with the supporting report provided by Valeo Technology.
  • GSK TaipeiSoundscaping delivered and commissioned to the agreed background sound levels, with the supporting report provided by Valeo Technology.
  • SAP MelbourneValeo Technology provided the report to the project’s WELL consultants covering the system, the ambient levels before and after, and the commissioned result.
  • Sheldon InteriorsCertified WELL Gold. The certification is the project’s. Valeo Technology deployed and commissioned the system and wrote the report documenting the measured levels in circulation areas and focus rooms.

Where it contributes

Where soundscaping can contribute

Under WELL v2, these are the areas where a designed background sound layer can contribute to a project.

S06

Minimum background sound

The primary contribution, and the feature a designed background sound layer speaks to directly. On our projects we commission to 40 to 45 dBA across open work areas and 40 to 42 dBA in focus rooms, agreed with the project’s acoustic consultant. We provide a report covering the system, measured levels and commissioned result for the project’s WELL submission.

Sound

Acoustic zoning and planning

Soundscaping supports the acoustic zoning strategy, because the zones are set by what each area is used for rather than by level alone, and they are documented before installation. It sits alongside the absorption, isolation and layout work rather than replacing any of it.

Mind

Connection to nature, connection to place and restorative spaces

Nature-based soundscapes can contribute to connection to nature, carrying biophilic intent beyond the visual. Localised or culturally relevant sound can contribute to connection to place. Soundscaping can also contribute to the design of restorative spaces in quiet and wellness rooms. Your WELL consultant confirms which Mind strategies a project pursues.

Community

Multisensory design

Soundscaping can contribute to multisensory design. WELL recognises multisensory zoning and biophilic sound within inclusive and neuro-inclusive design. It is pursued deliberately at design stage, which is the practical reason to bring the sound layer into the conversation while the brief is still open.

Applicable features and submission requirements are agreed with the project’s WELL consultant against its registered standard version.

Measured, not assumed

What we measure, and what we hand over

We measure ambient levels in the areas named in the brief before and after installation, commission the system to the levels agreed with your acoustic consultant, and hand your WELL consultant a report covering the system, the measured levels and the commissioned result.

Where a project is pursuing points that depend on measured outcomes on site, it helps to agree the targets and the measurement method while the brief is still open, so the sound layer is designed to the same numbers it will later be tested against.

Valeo Technology’s published typical figures for adaptive soundscaping: Speech Transmission Index from 0.75 down to 0.45 in open plan. Distraction distance from 15 m to 5 m, measured before and after at one installation.

The next version of WELL, as previewed in March 2026

IWBI has published a preview of the next version of the standard under its One WELL vision. It restructures the Sound concept from features into a smaller set of Themes and Strategies, removes the point caps that applied per concept, and allows preconditions to earn points where they previously earned none. Sound is named in the requirement text of the connection to nature and place strategy, and in the inclusive design strategies at both the calming and the activating ends of the sensory spectrum.

We use it as forward guidance when a brief is being written, and nothing on this page above depends on it.

As previewed in March 2026, and not a current requirement. Status, timing and enrolment arrangements should be confirmed with your WELL consultant, and a project registered under WELL v2 is assessed against WELL v2.

Discuss your WELL project

Send us your floor plan and the WELL objectives on your brief. We’ll work with your project team to identify where soundscaping can contribute and develop an initial proposal.
