The challenge
Two jobs on one floor
A new Melbourne workplace with an open back-of-house workspace, collaboration and presentation areas, a 16-person boardroom, and a reception and breakout area at the front.
The open workspace needed reduced speech distraction and support for speech privacy: conversation two desks away that does not pull attention off the task. The front of house needed something else, a character for arriving and gathering. One acoustic answer would not serve both, and the fitout had a WELL target to meet on background sound.
The approach
Privacy where people work, character where they arrive
Six zones across 1,500 square metres. Privacy soundscapes run through the office floor to reduce speech intelligibility; more upbeat and calming content runs through the front of house.
The content came from the Moodsonic library rather than being composed for the building. The design work here was in the zoning, the levels and the commissioning: deciding what each area needed, setting the background level each zone runs at, and measuring the commissioned levels on site.
Commissioning and WELL
Measured before, measured after, reported
Ambient levels were measured before and after the system was installed, and the system was commissioned to the WELL v2 band for feature S06 Minimum Background Sound in open work areas, 40 to 45 dBA.
Valeo Technology provided the report to the project’s WELL consultants covering the system, the ambient levels before and after, and the commissioned result. SAP Melbourne is one of five projects where Valeo Technology has delivered, commissioned and reported against S06 this way, with GSK Melbourne, GSK Bangkok, GSK Taipei and Sheldon Interiors.
Outcome
A commissioned and documented sound environment
A designed background sound level supporting speech privacy across the open workspace, and a front of house that sounds like an arrival rather than an office.
The soundscaping was delivered alongside Mott MacDonald, the audiovisual consultants, and installed through the project’s audiovisual integrator, so it landed as part of the technology package rather than as a separate system.
